Should I use Whop or Stripe to sell digital products?

Whop, unless you have engineers. Whop charges 2.7% + $0.30 per sale with no monthly fee, and includes checkout, course delivery, community, a mobile app, affiliate management, BNPL and marketplace discovery. Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 and includes none of those, so matching Whop on Stripe costs roughly $200 to $500 a month in extra tools. Stripe is the right answer if you need custom billing logic, sell physical products, or have the volume and engineering team to justify building the rest yourself.

I have set up both. The honest version of this comparison is much shorter than the ones you will find elsewhere, so here it is up front.

Stripe is a payment processor. It moves money and stops there. Everything you need to actually sell a course, a community or a subscription -- hosting the content, gating access, running affiliates, offering installments, having an app your buyers can open -- you buy separately and wire together yourself.

Whop is the whole thing in one account, and it charges less per transaction than Stripe does. That is the entire argument. The rest of this page is the math, the fees nobody puts on a landing page, and how to get set up.

If you read that table and thought "so Whop is cheaper and does more," you have understood the comparison correctly. The reason people still hesitate is that it sounds too easy, so let me show you the actual numbers.

Whop is cheaper on the fee alone, before any tools

On a $100 sale, Whop takes $3.00 and Stripe takes $3.20. On a $500 sale it is $13.80 against $14.80. On a $1,000 sale, $27.30 against $29.30.

That gap is small on its own. At $100,000 of annual revenue it is about $200. Worth having, not worth switching for.

ACH1.5%, capped at $5Similar, plan-dependent

Monthly platform fee$0$0

The one case where Stripe genuinely wins on rate: if you process $500,000 or more a year, you can negotiate a custom rate below 2.7%. That requires volume and leverage. Below that level Stripe will quote you the card rate on its pricing page, the same as everyone else.

The number that actually decides it

Nobody switches payment processor over 0.2%. What people switch over is the stack tax: everything Stripe does not do, which you pay for monthly, whether or not you made a sale that month.

Here is the same business modelled on both, at three sizes.

Annual revenueOn WhopOn Stripe plus the tools to matchWhat Whop keeps in your pocket
$25,000~$750 to $850~$2,400 to $3,000~$1,600 to $2,200
$100,000~$3,000 to $3,200~$6,700 to $7,800~$3,500 to $4,600
$500,000~$14,000 to $15,000~$17,300 to $27,300~$3,000 to $12,000

The Stripe column assumes a course platform (Teachable Basic at $39/month up to Kajabi Pro at $199/month), a community (Circle or Skool, $39 to $99/month), and an affiliate tool (FirstPromoter or Rewardful, $49 to $99/month). It does not include a mobile app, because on Stripe there is no honest cheap answer to that: you either build one or your buyers do not get one.

Two things to notice.

The gap is widest when you are smallest. At $25,000 of revenue the Stripe stack eats three times what Whop does, and most of it is fixed monthly cost you pay in the months you sell nothing. That is the single most expensive thing about starting on Stripe: the bill arrives before the revenue does.

The gap never closes to zero. Even at half a million a year with a negotiated Stripe rate, the tools still cost more than $0 a month.

What Stripe still wins

I am not going to pretend this is one-sided, because on a few things it is not, and if you are one of these people Whop will frustrate you.

Complex billing. Usage-based pricing, metered billing, seat licensing, prorations, enterprise invoicing, multi-entity structures. Stripe Billing handles all of it. Whop handles standard subscriptions, trials and coupons, and stops well short of that.

Developer control. Stripe's API and docs are the best in the industry and it is not close. If you want to build a checkout that behaves exactly the way you designed it, Stripe is the only sensible choice. Whop's API at dev.whop.com covers products, memberships, customers and transactions, and it is fine, but it is not in the same league for depth.

Physical products. Whop is built for digital. If you ship boxes, use Stripe with a proper commerce platform.

Very high volume with a team. Above $500,000 a year, with engineers already on payroll, a negotiated Stripe rate plus tools you have already built can come out ahead. Run your own numbers rather than trusting either of us.

The Whop costs nobody puts on the landing page

If I only showed you the good side of this you would be right not to trust the rest of the page. So:

Payouts are not free. Next-day ACH is $2.50 flat, which is nothing. But instant bank deposit runs 4% + $1.00, crypto and Venmo are 5% + $1.00, and a bank wire is $23.00. If you take instant payouts every day out of habit, you can quietly pay more in payout fees than you saved on the transaction rate. Take ACH, take it weekly.

BNPL costs 15%. Whop's financing partners charge 15% per successful transaction. On a $2,000 program where installments are what makes the sale possible, that is usually worth it. On a $47 product it is not. Decide per offer, not per platform.

The tax fee is documented twice, differently. Whop's fee docs list 2% per transaction when tax is collected. Its network pricing page says 0.5%. I have flagged this for months and it has not been reconciled. Check what your own dashboard actually charges before you model it.

Affiliate processing is 1.25% on top of whatever commission you set, and affiliate payouts sit for 30 days before release.

None of these change the verdict. They change the setup: take ACH payouts, price BNPL into high-ticket offers only, and check your tax rate in the dashboard.

Straight answer, because you should know exactly what you are clicking.

Our link opens Whop as a partner referral. Two things follow from that. You land in Whop Network's onboarding rather than the generic signup, which is how you end up with an actual account manager instead of a support widget. And Whop's Custom Pricing tier -- the one that carries a dedicated account manager, country-specific rates and volume-based pricing -- becomes a conversation you can have with a named person once your volume justifies it.

What I am not going to tell you is that the link gets you a magic discount on day one. Nobody can price your volume before they have seen it, and anyone promising you a specific rate up front is guessing. The starting rate through our link is the same 2.7% + $0.30 everyone gets, which is already lower than Stripe's, and the introduction is what makes the better-rate conversation possible later.

We get paid by Whop, not by you. Your fees are identical whether you use our link or type the URL yourself. That is the whole disclosure.

Create your Whop account

Setting up as a seller, start to finish

This takes about twenty minutes if your product already exists. I timed it.

  1. Create the account. Email, password, and pick "sell" rather than "buy" when it asks. No card required and no monthly fee, so there is nothing to cancel if you change your mind.
  2. Verify your business. Standard KYC: legal name or company, address, tax details, and a bank account for payouts. This is the step people put off. Do it first, because payouts are blocked until it clears and it can take a day or two.
  3. Create your whop. That is Whop's word for the product. Name it, price it, choose one-time or recurring, and set a trial if you want one.
  4. Add what the buyer receives. Course modules, a community chat, a file, a Discord role, a licence key, or access to a hosted app. This is the part that would have been a separate platform on Stripe.
  5. Turn on BNPL if the price justifies it. Anything above roughly $500 usually converts better with installments. Remember the 15%.
  6. Set your affiliate commission. The default is 30% and you set it yourself. Your buyers can now sell for you, with tracking and payouts handled.
  7. Set payouts to next-day ACH. $2.50 a payout beats 4% + $1.00, every single time.

Then take the checkout link and put it where your traffic already is. Being listed in the marketplace is free and can add sales on its own, since Whop removed the 30% marketplace commission in May 2025 and marketplace-sourced sales now pay the same rate as direct ones.

Already on Stripe? Switch without breaking anything

Do not cut over. Run both for 30 to 60 days.

Send every new customer to Whop from day one. Leave existing Stripe subscriptions alone and let them either run out or move at their next renewal, which avoids the failed-payment mess that comes with force-migrating card data.

If your Stripe setup is just Checkout or Payment Links, that is the whole migration. Recreate the products, swap the links, done in an afternoon.

If you have webhooks driving automations, audit every listener before you switch and map each one to its Whop equivalent. If those webhooks feed a marketing platform, update the endpoint there rather than rebuilding the workflow.

Export your customer, transaction and subscription history from Stripe before you close anything. It does not come with you.

Stripe Connect is the one case to think hard about. A multi-seller marketplace built on Connect is not a like-for-like move, and rearchitecting seller onboarding and payouts may not be worth it.

The bottom line

If you are selling digital products and you are not employing engineers, Whop wins on the fee, wins on the monthly cost, and wins on the amount of work between you and your first sale. The comparison is only close if you need billing logic Whop cannot express, or you are big enough that Stripe will negotiate.

The lowest-risk way to settle it is to open a Whop account and price your own catalogue in it. It costs nothing, there is no monthly fee to cancel, and you will know in an hour whether the stack you are paying for on Stripe is earning its keep.

One more thing, and then I will leave it: Whop sells, it does not market. If you also need a CRM, email and SMS automation, and pipelines behind the sale, that is a separate tool, and the Whop and GoHighLevel webhook setup is written up here. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Whop cheaper than Stripe?
Yes, for almost everyone selling digital products. Whop is 2.7% + $0.30 per transaction against Stripe's standard 2.9% + $0.30, and Whop includes course delivery, community, a mobile app, affiliate management, BNPL and marketplace discovery at no extra cost. Matching those on Stripe costs roughly $200 to $500 a month. At $100,000 of annual revenue the total difference is about $3,500 to $4,600 a year. Stripe only comes out cheaper if you process $500,000+ and negotiate a custom rate.
How do I sign up as a seller on Whop?
Create an account and choose the seller path, complete business verification (legal name, address, tax details and a bank account), create your product, attach what the buyer receives (course, community, file, Discord role or app access), set your affiliate commission, and set payouts to next-day ACH. It takes about twenty minutes if your product already exists, and verification is the step to do first because payouts are blocked until it clears.
Does it cost anything to open a Whop account?
No. There is no monthly fee and no card required to open a seller account. You pay 2.7% + $0.30 when you make a sale and nothing when you do not, which is the main structural difference from a Stripe stack, where the course platform, community tool and affiliate software bill you every month whether you sell or not.
Do I get better fees by signing up through an affiliate link?
Your starting rate is the same 2.7% + $0.30 either way, and it is already lower than Stripe's standard rate. What a partner link changes is the route in: you arrive through Whop Network onboarding rather than a cold signup, which is how sellers end up with a named account manager. Whop's Custom Pricing tier lists a dedicated account manager, country-specific rates and volume-based pricing, but those are negotiated against real volume, so treat any promise of a specific discount before you have sold anything as a red flag.
What is the 30% Whop marketplace fee?
It no longer exists. Whop charged 30% on marketplace-sourced sales historically and removed that fee in May 2025. Marketplace sales now pay the same transaction fee as direct sales, which makes marketplace listing free customer acquisition. The 30% figure still circulating online usually refers to the default affiliate commission, which sellers set themselves and which only applies when an affiliate actually drives a sale.
What does Whop charge to pay me out?
Next-day ACH is $2.50 flat. Instant bank deposit is 4% + $1.00, crypto and Venmo are 5% + $1.00, and a bank wire is $23.00. Sellers who take instant payouts by habit can spend more on payout fees than they saved on the transaction rate, so unless you have a cash-flow reason, take next-day ACH.
Is Stripe better for SaaS billing?
For complex models, yes. Usage-based pricing, metered billing, seat licensing, prorations and enterprise invoicing are all Stripe Billing territory and Whop does not reach that far. For standard monthly or annual subscriptions with trials and coupons, Whop handles it comfortably. The dividing line is billing complexity, not company size.
Does Whop work internationally?
Yes. Whop supports payments in 190+ countries, with local acquiring entities in the US, Canada, EU, UK and Australia that keep regional sales at the domestic rate. International cards add 1.5% and currency conversion adds 1% where it applies, which mirrors Stripe's cross-border pricing. Stripe has broader local infrastructure across 40+ countries, so businesses with complex multi-region compliance needs may still prefer it.
Can I use Whop and Stripe at the same time?
For the same transaction, no. Whop processes its own payments. For different parts of a business, yes, and plenty of people do it: a SaaS product billing through Stripe and a course or community selling through Whop. Most people consolidate eventually because two dashboards and two payout schedules is a tax on your attention.
Should I switch from Stripe to Whop?
If you are paying monthly for a course platform, a community tool and an affiliate app on top of Stripe, then almost certainly yes, and the saving is usually $2,000 to $5,000 a year before counting BNPL and the mobile app. If you have a heavily customised Stripe integration serving billing logic Whop cannot express, the migration is not worth it. Run both in parallel for 30 to 60 days before deciding either way.
Does Whop have BNPL and what does it cost?
Yes, built in for digital products, which is unusual. It costs 15% per successful transaction through Whop's financing partners. On a high-ticket program where installments are what make the purchase possible, that pays for itself. On a low-priced product it does not. Turn it on per offer rather than everywhere.
Does Whop have a mobile app?
Yes, native iOS and Android apps for both sellers and buyers. Buyers browse, purchase, access communities and consume course content in the app; sellers manage revenue and members from their phone. Stripe has a merchant dashboard app but nothing customer-facing, so on Stripe your buyers get whatever mobile experience you build.
