What are GoHighLevel Email Sequences?
Email Sequences in GoHighLevel are automated multi-step email follow-ups that keep every message in a single threaded conversation. Unlike regular campaigns (one-time sends) or workflow email actions (separate unthreaded messages), sequences send connected follow-up emails with configurable delays, conditional logic based on open or delivery status, and automatic stop-on-reply. The feature launched in Beta Labs on June 11, 2026, and is available to all accounts that enable it in Settings.
GoHighLevel released Email Sequences in Beta Labs on June 11, 2026. The feature fills a gap that agencies and sales teams have worked around for years: automated follow-up emails that stay in a single threaded conversation instead of arriving as disconnected individual messages.
This matters because threaded follow-ups convert better. When a prospect opens email number three in a sequence, they can scroll up and see the full conversation history. It looks like a real person following up, not a marketing blast. The difference between "I wanted to follow up on my previous email" appearing in the same thread versus landing as a standalone message is significant for reply rates.
This guide covers how to enable Email Sequences, how to set one up step by step, what the conditional logic and stop-on-reply features do, and when to use sequences instead of regular campaigns or workflow email actions.
How to Enable Email Sequences
Email Sequences is currently a Beta Labs feature. It will not appear in the navigation until it is enabled.
- Navigate to Settings in the sub-account
- Open Beta Labs
- Find Email Sequences and toggle it on
Once enabled, Email Sequences appears under Marketing > Email > Campaigns alongside regular email campaigns. The two share the same navigation but are distinct features.
Info
Beta Labs features are account-level toggles. Each sub-account where sequences are needed must enable the feature separately. The feature is available on all GoHighLevel plans: Starter ($97/month), Unlimited ($297/month), and Agency Pro (previously SaaS Pro) at $497/month.
Creating an Email Sequence: Step by Step
Step 1: Start a New Sequence
From Marketing > Email > Campaigns, click Create New Sequence. This opens the sequence builder, which looks different from the regular campaign editor.
Give the sequence a name that identifies its purpose. "Post-Demo Follow-Up" or "Lead Nurture - Pricing Page" works better than "Sequence 1" when managing multiple active sequences across client accounts.
Step 2: Define the Audience
Select the contacts, lists, or segments that should enter the sequence. This works the same way as regular campaign audience selection.
Contacts enter the sequence once. If a contact already completed or exited the sequence, they will not re-enter. This prevents duplicate follow-ups.
Step 3: Build Email Steps
Each step in a sequence is a single email. Add steps sequentially, with each one representing the next message in the threaded conversation.
For each step, configure:
- Email content: Choose between designed emails (using the visual editor) or plain text. Plain text emails tend to perform better for sales follow-up sequences because they look like personal messages rather than marketing emails.
- Delay: Set the time between this step and the previous one. Common patterns are 2 days, then 4 days, then 7 days for a three-step follow-up sequence.
- Conditions: Optionally gate a step on the previous email's open or delivery status. For example, step 3 can be set to send only if step 2 was delivered but not opened, enabling different messaging for engaged versus unengaged contacts.
Step 4: Configure Stop on Reply
This is the feature that separates sequences from basic drip campaigns. When Stop on Reply is enabled, the sequence automatically stops sending future emails to a contact who replies to any message in the thread.
Enable this for all sales and outreach sequences. There is no scenario where continuing automated follow-ups after someone replies makes sense. The reply is the goal.
Step 5: Launch and Monitor
After configuring all steps, launch the sequence. GoHighLevel provides both sequence-level and step-level analytics:
- Sequence-level: Total sent, opened, clicked, replied, and stopped counts across the entire sequence
- Step-level: The same metrics broken down by individual step, making it possible to identify where engagement drops off
Threaded Conversations: Why It Matters
The core differentiator of Email Sequences versus other automation approaches is the threaded conversation. Every email in a sequence arrives in the same email thread in the recipient's inbox.
From the recipient's perspective, it looks like one ongoing conversation:
Email 1 (Day 0): "Hi [Name], following up on your demo request..." Email 2 (Day 2): "Just wanted to make sure you saw my note below..." Email 3 (Day 6): "Last follow-up -- would [specific date] work for a quick call?"
All three appear stacked in a single thread. The recipient sees the full context every time they open any message. This is how manual sales follow-up works, and now it is automated.
Conditional Sending: Open and Delivery Logic
Sequences support conditional logic at the step level based on two signals:
- Delivery status: Was the previous email successfully delivered?
- Open status: Did the recipient open the previous email?
This creates branching behavior within a linear sequence:
- If delivered and opened: Send a follow-up that references specific content (they engaged)
- If delivered but not opened: Send a different subject line or approach (try to break through)
- If not delivered: Skip the step or end the sequence (bad email address)
This is not full workflow branching logic. Sequences are intentionally simpler. For complex multi-channel automation with extensive branching, workflows remain the right tool. Sequences are specifically for email-only, threaded follow-up.
Sequences vs. Campaigns vs. Workflows
Choosing the wrong tool leads to either missing features or unnecessary complexity.
| Feature | Regular Campaign | Email Sequence | Workflow Email Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Threaded conversation | No | Yes | No |
| Multiple steps | No (one send) | Yes | Yes (multiple actions) |
| Delays between emails | No | Yes (built-in) | Yes (wait steps) |
| Conditional logic | No | Open/delivery based | Full branching |
| Stop on reply | No | Yes (automatic) | Manual (requires triggers) |
| Multi-channel | No | No (email only) | Yes (email, SMS, calls, etc.) |
| Analytics | Campaign-level | Sequence + step level | Workflow execution logs |
Use regular campaigns for newsletters, announcements, and one-time sends to a list.
Use Email Sequences for sales follow-ups, lead nurturing, appointment reminders, and any scenario where threaded email conversation matters and stop-on-reply is important.
Use workflows for multi-channel automation (email plus SMS, plus task creation, plus pipeline updates) or scenarios requiring complex conditional branching beyond open/delivery status.
Workflow Enrollment: Triggering Sequences Automatically
Email Sequences can be enrolled through workflow actions. This is where sequences and workflows complement each other rather than compete.
A practical setup:
- A workflow triggers when a contact fills out a form or reaches a pipeline stage
- The workflow performs initial actions (assigns a tag, creates a task, sends an SMS)
- A workflow action enrolls the contact into an Email Sequence for threaded follow-up
This combines the multi-channel capability of workflows with the threaded conversation experience of sequences. The workflow handles the broad automation, and the sequence handles the email follow-up thread.
Email AI Integration
Sequences support GoHighLevel's Email AI for generating email content within steps. For agencies managing multiple client accounts, this speeds up sequence creation by drafting step content that can be reviewed and edited before launch.
The AI generates content per step, not for the entire sequence at once. Each step still needs individual review to ensure the message progression makes sense as a threaded conversation.
Practical Use Cases for Agencies
Sales Follow-Up (3-Step)
Goal: Convert demo requests into booked calls
- Step 1 (Day 0): Confirm the demo request, propose a specific time
- Step 2 (Day 2): Reference step 1, offer an alternative time
- Step 3 (Day 5): Final follow-up, include a direct calendar link
Stop on Reply enabled. Plain text format. Expected reply rate: higher than unthreaded alternatives because the recipient sees the full context.
Client Onboarding Check-In (4-Step)
Goal: Ensure new clients complete setup milestones
- Step 1 (Day 1): Welcome, link to setup checklist
- Step 2 (Day 3): Check in on progress, offer help
- Step 3 (Day 7): Milestone check, flag common issues
- Step 4 (Day 14): Status summary, introduce next phase
Stop on Reply enabled. Designed email format for step 1 (branded welcome), plain text for steps 2-4 (personal check-in feel).
Re-Engagement (2-Step)
Goal: Revive cold leads who showed initial interest
- Step 1 (Day 0): Reference their original inquiry, share something new
- Step 2 (Day 4): Short, direct ask with a clear call to action
Condition on step 2: send only if step 1 was delivered and opened. If they opened but did not reply, the second touch is warranted. If they did not open, a different approach (perhaps via SMS through a workflow) may be more effective.
Current Limitations
Email Sequences is a Beta Labs feature as of June 2026. Some capabilities are not yet available:
- A/B testing per step is listed on the roadmap but not yet live
- Workflow enrollment into sequences is on the roadmap
- Sequences are email-only -- no SMS or other channel steps within the sequence itself
- No branching within sequences -- conditional logic is limited to open/delivery status on the previous step; full branching requires workflows
These limitations are expected for a Beta Labs release. The core functionality (threaded conversations, delays, conditions, stop-on-reply, analytics) is fully operational.
Getting Started
For agencies evaluating Email Sequences:
- Enable the feature in Beta Labs on one sub-account first
- Build a simple 2-3 step sales follow-up sequence
- Run it alongside an existing workflow-based follow-up for the same audience segment
- Compare reply rates and engagement metrics after 2-3 weeks
- Roll out to additional sub-accounts based on results
The feature is available on all plans. There is no additional cost beyond the standard GoHighLevel subscription. Not on the platform yet? The 30-day free trial is long enough to run the full comparison test above before paying anything.
